French Empire Mahogany Centre Desk with Gilt Bronze Handles – 19th Century

Elegant French Empire-style centre desk dating from the second half of the 19th century, crafted from mahogany and figured mahogany veneer. The desk is distinguished by its imposing proportions, refined construction and rich ornamentation inspired by the decorative repertoire of the Napoleonic Empire.

It features a large rectangular top with a moulded edge and a leather writing surface, framed by a wooden border. The front is arranged with four drawers, comprising two stacked drawers on each side and two central drawers, all enhanced by elegant gilt bronze escutcheons and handles with refined Neoclassical motifs.

A particularly noteworthy feature is its centre-desk construction: the piece is finished and decorated on the back as well as the front, allowing it to be positioned freely in the middle of a room rather than against a wall.
