French Napoleon III Semainier Chest with Floral Marquetry and Gilt Bronze Mounts, Second Half of the 19th Century
Elegant and slender French semainier chest dating from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in the Napoleon III style. The front features five drawers, richly decorated with polychrome marquetry depicting floral and vegetal motifs, created using different shades of precious wood veneers that give the piece a remarkable decorative effect.
The upper surface is made of shaped marble, while the sides are veneered with a refined arrangement of the wood grain. The base is embellished with gilt bronze applications and finely modeled feet. Each drawer is completed with elegant chased bronze escutcheons and handles.
A refined example of French 19th-century cabinetmaking, combining luxurious materials, elaborate decoration, and the sophisticated taste typical of the Napoleon III period.
