Large French oil painting on canvas dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, depicting Saint John the Baptist Preaching in the Desert, a sacred scene set within a vast and evocative Arcadian landscape.

At the centre of the composition stands Saint John the Baptist, semi-nude and covered with the traditional camel-skin garment, depicted in the act of baptizing a kneeling penitent. Around him, a lively group of figures takes part in the sacred event.

On the left, two elderly men engaged in conversation, wrapped in red and ochre cloaks, are accompanied by several seated figures shown in attitudes of contemplation and penitence. On the right, a group of women in richly draped garments gathers around the scene, including a mother holding her child to her breast. A young man dressed in an antique-style costume also observes the baptism.
