Rare French 18th-Century Double-Sided Religious Painting – Purification of the Virgin and Resurrection of Christ

Rare French double-sided devotional painting dating from the 18th century, featuring two sacred scenes painted on opposite sides of the same wooden support and enclosed in a simple dark wooden frame. This unusual double-face format makes the artwork a particularly interesting example of antique religious painting and devotional art.

One side depicts the Purification of the Virgin, an episode associated with the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, with the sacred figures arranged in a traditional religious composition.

The opposite side represents the Resurrection of Christ. The Redeemer, wrapped in a red mantle and surrounded by a luminous almond-shaped halo of clouds and light, rises triumphantly from the tomb. Around the sepulchre, the guards in armour react dramatically, some lying on the ground and others recoiling in astonishment.

The combination of two important Christian subjects on a single wooden support makes this 18th-century French devotional painting a rare and highly decorative piece, suitable for collectors of antique religious art, sacred paintings and European antiques.
